After completely winning the case at U.S. district court in 2017, the Government appealed. On appeal, the D.C. Court of Appeals ruled in 2019 that the Government can charge for the costs of issuing PTINs and maintaining the PTIN database. Our side thinks those costs are very small. The Government thinks they are large. The U.S. district court will be called upon to decide. Counsel for the Government has already told us that the Government will take the case back to the D.C. Court of Appeals, once the district court rules. It will take awhile for the district court to rule. I expect the case to continue on for at least a couple more years.
